About the Author

“Edwin J. Edwards”, born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and raised on a farm in Sherrill/Pastoria, Arkansas, has had a rich and varied life deeply rooted in music and faith. From his early years, he was an active member of New Hope AME Church, where he progressed from being a choir member to the choir director, pianist, and eventually a gospel saxophonist. His educational journey began at St. Peter’s Catholic School and continued through junior high and high school in the Pine Bluff School District, where he excelled in music and leadership, notably as a member of the school band, DECA public speaking team, and Cadet Commander in the Junior Air Force ROTC. He then attended the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB), majoring in agriculture, and played the saxophone in the UAPB marching band. His musical talents extended to performing with The Vocal Airs, a gospel recording group, which allowed him to travel and share his music widely.

Edwin’s dedication to leadership and service was recognized when he became one of the first members of LEADAR (LEAD Arkansas), sponsored by the Kellogg Foundation. His spiritual calling led him to the ministry at New St. Hurricane Missionary Baptist Church in Pine Bluff, where he served as an associate minister and saxophonist. This path continued with pastoral roles at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Moscow, Arkansas, and Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Throughout his career, Edwin has also been a farmer, operated heavy farming equipment, worked as a truck driver, welder, mechanic, and musician, showcasing his versatility and dedication to hard work.

Above all, Edwin values his role as a father to his five children: Edwin Junior, Crandall, Laron, Jerjuan, Breana (my bonus daughter), and his late daughter Jimere, who holds a special place in his heart. His deep faith in Jesus Christ has been a guiding force in his life, inspiring him to serve others through preaching, the food service industry, and his saxophone ministry. Edwin attributes his commitment to serving humanity to the teachings of his parents and the words of Jesus: “Whatsoever you do to the least of these my brethren, you do unto me.” This belief has driven him to touch countless lives through his various roles and ministries.
